The medical college at Dr RN Cooper Hospital, formally known as Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray medical college will get a new six storey college building in the next three years. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 187 crore and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) expects that construction work of the new college building will begin in the next few months.
Tenders for the construction have been floated and two firms, namely Nagarjuna Construction Company and New Consolidated Construction Company have submitted their bids. Sources from the civic body said that of the two firms, the one that will back the tender, the proposal to appoint the firm will be sent to the civic standing committee for approval. The proposal is expected to be tabled before the committee in July, after which the work order will be given, a civic official told DNA, requesting anonymity.
The medical college at Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle (W) is the city's fourth BMC-run medical college which started in 2015. The college has 150 seats for MBBS. However, the college presently is set up in an old building of Cooper hospital which was used for casualties.
"It will take three years for the new building to get ready. After which, the existing college will be shifted to new building. The old structure will also be used for medical college purposes only", said Dr Avinash Supe, Director of Medical Education.
The new college building will be located in the hospital premises itself, next to the present college building. It will also have 180 vehicles parking capacity.
Apart from the college building, BMC has floated tenders for a hostel building for Cooper medical college students. The hostel will be set up in Tata compound of SV Road, Vile Parle Weste time.
