You might have heard of weight loss competitions, but the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is now organising a competition for people suffering from diabetes.

The MNS will launch its "Fight Diabetes" competition where patients, who are able to keep their diabetes under control for a period of six months can walk away with Rs 1 lakh as prize money. The bid is the MNS's plan to woo middle-class voters ahead of the 2017 BMC polls.

"This competition is part of an awareness campaign. It will motivate people to fight diabetes and keep their sugar levels under control. We will have a panel of doctors who will monitor the participants and their sugar levels. We will also teach them how to exercise and stay fit," said Sandeep Deshpande, MNS corporator from Dadar, who is organizing the competition.

The competition will be held in two categories one for people below 50 years of age and another for above 50 years diabetic patients. A panel of three doctors and a dietician will judge the competition. Participants will have to get themselves checked both before and after the competition so that the panel knows exactly how much sugar they have controlled.

Deshpande had in the past held cleanliness competitions between the BMC and citizens in Dadar, where citizen groups had won against the BMC.

"We will flag off this competition from November 14 this year which is also observed as World Diabetes Day. Registration for the competition would begin from October 14 and would be open for a fortnight. The competition will end in May next year," Deshpande added.

"People are known to conduct health camps which go on for a day. There is no follow up after that. We would carry on this competition for a period of six months. Participants' sugar levels would be checked after three months to make sure nobody cheats. The person who controls diabetes the most will win," said Deshpande.
