The Congress, which has decided on Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil as the party group leader in the assembly, on Monday announced that it would form a shadow cabinet to work as an effective opposition.
State unit president Manikrao Thakare, after announcing that Vikhe-Patil would lead the party in the House, said the shadow cabinet would keep vigil on works undertaken by every minister in the BJP government. He said the members of the shadow cabinet would raise issues pertaining to their responsibilities in order to expose the government. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was held last week to decide the legislature party leader. Central observer Mallikarjun Kharge along with All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Maharashtra, Mohan Prakash, had met all the elected MLAs and MLCs separately to hear them out, and then submitted a report to the Congress high command. The legislature party meeting also passed a one-line resolution authorising party president Sonia Gandhi to finalise the name of the CLP leader.
It may be recalled here that former minister Abdul Sattar had openly opposed former chief minister Prithviraj leading the CLP. And Chavan, on the day of the CLP meeting, announced he was out of the race for the post.
It was in this context that the party high command decided to vest the responsibility of leading the party in the assembly on Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil. Interestingly, Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil, Radhakrishna's father, had made a statement last week that Congress should also support the BJP.
On being asked about his father's statement, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil told media persons that it was his father's personal opinion and not the party's stand. He said Congress, which had accepted the people's verdict, would work as an effective opposition.
