Commuting to Mumbai has become nightmare for many city residents, as auto rickshaws refuse to go. Commuters have to shell out more money for going there, as other mode of commuting is costly. The situation has arisen after auto rickshaw drivers complained of being penalised by Mumbai traffic unit. According to auto rickshaw drivers, they are fined by the Mumbai traffic police as they have permit of Navi Mumbai.
Kanak Tiwari, said, "Earlier, auto rickshaws used to go to Mumbai without any problems but suddenly, they stopped going there. Their refusal had forced me to take a taxi to go to my college in Mumbai while shelling out more money."
There are many commuters who used to go Mumbai in auto rickshaws as it is economic. "Everyone cannot travel to Mumbai in taxi as the fare will be much higher than going in auto rickshaw," said Tiwari. She cannot travel in trains as her health does not allow. "My health does not allow me to travel in bus or train and commuting in auto rickshaw is also economic. But these changes has created trouble for me," added Tiwari.
However, some auto drivers complain that they do not want to go Mumbai as they find difficult to get passenger while returning to Navi Mumbai. "Earlier I used to go to Mumbai but while returning I found it difficult to get passengers. On many occasions, I had to return without any passenger," said a auto rickshaw driver. He added that during day time he cannot ask half return.
According to the RTO, city auto rickshaws can go to only one destination in Mumbai at a time and has to return to Navi Mumbai from there only. "They can carry passengers from Navi Mumbai to only one destination and from there they have to return back to Navi Mumbai," said Sanjay Dhaygude, Deputy Regional Transport office, Vashi. He added that auto rickshaw with Navi Mumbai permit cannot move within Mumbai to ferry passengers.
