The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) improvement committee chairman has written to chief minister, requesting him to direct collector office of city and suburbs to speed up the process of transfer of private land to the BMC. There are 167 proposals of private land that are pending with the collector office. These plots have reservation for public amenities.

The BMC had faced flack after it had failed to acquire a 3.3-acre Jogeshwari plot within one year of purchase order. As per the rule, after purchase order is submitted by land owner (private land) at the BMC, the civic body has to complete the process of acquiring within a year. The BMC lost the plot as the period lapsed. The land was reserved as recreational ground in the 1991 DP plan.

According to MNS corporator Dilip Lande , there are 167 proposals to acquire private land that are reserved for public amenities like playground, recreational ground, road, school and parking among others. Of the 167 proposals, 44 are for city while 123 are pending with suburburban collector. Lande said that delays could escalate costs and lose public money. “The decision on transfer of such plots needs to be taken immediately. Delay poses hurdle in developing public amenities like schools, road, playground among others. With the rise of high-rise in the city and lack of open spaces, delay in getting such plots will only add to the problem of residents,” said Lande.
