Entrepreneurs from Mumbai and students of IIT-Bombay and HR College of commerce in January will get to attend a seminar on how to tap the international market for their products. This is a first-of-its-kind seminar organised by the director general of foreign trade (ministry of commerce) in Maharashtra under the 'Niryat Bandhu' scheme.

The scheme means to reach out to youngsters especially those involved in the micro, small and medium scale industries, and make them aware about "the culture of different countries, trends of exports in India, World Trade Organisation, incentive schemes, interfaces with different government agencies like customs, excise, banks and ECGC," an official said.

After Mumbai's IIT and HR colleges in January, seminars will be held in Bhiwandi, another textile hub, and Aurangabad, a hub for the auto-spares industry.

This series of seminars begins with one in Ichalkaranji this Wednesday. It will feature 500 first-generation entrepreneurs and 50 students from local colleges. Ichalkaranji is chosen to start with for two main reasons: the city is already a textile hub exporting clothes worth crores; and two years ago it was crowned as the 'town of export excellence' by the ministry.

Kavita Gupta, additional director general of foreign trade (western region), who is set to deliver a talk in the seminar, told dna, "The ministry is seeking to reach out to students and entrepreneurs across India with the aim of boosting up exports. We will do so by motivating them to think innovatively about their products in line with current trends and with new markets in mind."

"The ministry's current focus is to boost up trade with the countries of Latin America, Africa and Commonwealth of Independent States (countries of erstwhile USSR), for which it offers various incentives to industries", said Gupta.Although the 'Niryat Bandhu' scheme was launched a few years ago, not much was done to promote the scheme until now. But the new union government is pushing the scheme across India, said an official.
