CM Devendra Fadnavis approves separate corporation to run Metro and Monorail in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

The two Metro corridors namely Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor and Dahisar East - Andheri East Metro-7 corridor for which operations are to start in 2020 along with that of Mumbai Monorail.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Wednesday, approved forming a separate company named Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMOCL) that will exclusively overlook operations of upcoming Metro corridors including the two Metro corridors namely Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor and Dahisar East - Andheri East Metro-7 corridor for which operations are to start in 2020 along with that of Mumbai Monorail.

The decision is expected to create employment for at least 1,000 professionals by 2020 who will be involved in the operations of Metro-7 and Metro-2A. However, this does not include Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor that is being operated by Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited.

RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said, "The company named MMOCL will look after all the Metro corridors that will come up in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and a start-up capital of Rs 5 crore will be given by MMRDA that will have its headquarters at Aarey Colony."

Rajeev added, "All type of revenue that comes from operations of Metro corridors will go to this independent company including ticketing and non-ticketing revenue, however, the profit will come to MMRDA for repaying the loans taken for construction of these Metro corridors."

The establishment of the same was approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who is also the chairman of MMRDA. The independent body MMOCL will have three at least directors and the chairman of the same will be the Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA.

The MMRDA in a statement said, "The Corporation will be an autonomous body and will deal with operation and maintenance of Metro Lines as also Monorail. In addition, the decision to create more than 1,000 posts has also been taken."

Currently, construction work on at least more than 100-km is ongoing in the city including south Mumbai, western suburbs, eastern suburbs and in Thane.

Further, Fadnavis also approved a new logo for MMRDA that was formed in 1975 as a planning agency but has been off lately involved in the construction of Metro, flyovers, bridges and roads. Due to this, a new logo was unveiled on Wednesday along with it a new logo for upcoming Mumbai Metro corridors.
