The state home department has suspended senior IPS officer Sunil Paraskar from service on Tuesday. The state home department had earlier moved a proposal to suspend the officer in the wake of the accusation of rape against him by a city-based model.

When dna contacted chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, he confirmed having signed the suspension order of the officer.

Paraskar was granted anticipatory bail on August 12 by a sessions court in Mumbai. The IPS officer has been accused of rape by a model who claimed she first met him when he was the additional commissioner of police (north region).

The case also took a political turn with Shiv Sena coming out in Paraskar's support and warning against a trial by media. An editorial in the Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna', which has party president Uddhav Thackeray as the editor and Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut as the executive editor, questioned whether it was fashionable to level rape charges. It also questioned the intentions of the model.

The 57-year-old Paraskar, promoted to the IPS from the state police service, has been booked under sections 376(2) (rape by a police officer), 376(C) (intercourse by superintendent of jail, etc) and 354(D) (stalking) following a complaint by the model.

The Mumbai police, in a report sent to the state director general of police (DGP), is said to have recommended his suspension on grounds that Paraskar had used his official car to travel outside his jurisdiction with the victim and also accepted gifts from her when the police was investigating another case registered by the model in his jurisdiction. This goes against the police service manual.

However, Paraskar's lawyer has admitted that his client and the survivor were friends and their physical relationship was at best consensual in nature.

The Maharashtra State Women's Commission had also written a letter to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on August 4, demanding Paraskar's suspension.
