The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will form a committee to check the track record of NGOs or private parties before giving them gardens or open spaces to maintain in future.
Currently, the civic body is in process of taking back 216 gardens or open spaces which were given on adoption basis to various NGOs, ALMs and private parties, in a phase-wise manner.
The issue of garden maintenance cropped up during the last civic standing committee meeting earlier this week, where corporators sought details of gardens taken back. Rais Shaikh, Samajwadi Party group leader, asked for a time-frame within which all gardens will be taken back, and sought to know how these spaces will be given for maintenance in the future.
He said that there are various gardens which are not maintained properly and do not even have security guards. Civic chief Ajoy Mehta informed that a committee will be formed to check the track records of private parties.
According to civic officials, around 91 plots given on adoption basis have not been taken back. The BMC's garden department has planned to take the plots back in three phases. Several plots given by the civic body are controlled by politicians or politically-affiliated groups across party lines.
When the civic body decided to take back open spaces, there was criticism as NGOs, ALMs and citizen groups alleged that BMC could not maintain them.
Mehta said that a policy is being framed wherein there will be provision for a committee which will check the track record of private players before giving them gardens or open spaces to maintain.
