The BMC will begin the process of formation and reservation of 227 municipal wards in Mumbai for the civic elections scheduled in February 2017. A crucial lottery draw for the reservation of different categories, including a reserved ward for women, will be held on October 3.

The state election commission has issued directions to the civic body to start the process from September 9 — a four-member committee consisting of the BMC commissioner, divisional commissioner of Konkan and the Mumbai collector (city and suburbs) will start it. The final list of wards is expected to be ready by November 22.

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta said the work on demarcation of new wards and de-limitation would begin soon. "We will start work right away on ward formation with the help of the assessor and collector department," he added.

By October 5, the draft ward formation list will be published, and then, till October 20 citizens' suggestions and objections will be sought. "Any citizen can give suggestions and objections if s/he finds that the formation has missed out a certain colony, or one colony has been cut into two. Generally, a senior secretary from the government's side is known to hear these suggestions and objections and prepare a report," said an official.

By November 18, the election commission will take a final decision on the wards, following which, on November 22, the civic commissioner will publish the list and the map along with all the changes suggested by the election commission.

Civic officials said that though the total number of electoral wards will remain the same (227), there will be shifting of wards as per the population. Numbers in the city area would reduce, while in the suburbs, they are expected to rise.
