Citizens ready to share personal data for improved infrastructure

Mumbaikars are more than willing to share their personal data in exchange for better infrastructure. A study conducted on around 1,088 citizens, around 68 per cent of the respondents were ready to share their personal data to help city agencies improve the infrastructure of public transport. While around 69 per cent of them opine that city officials tend to take a short-term view of infrastructure planning, 70 per cent say that feedback on infrastructure improvements and investments come too late during the planning stage to be of any use.

The study was conducted by the international engineering firm, AECOM which is one of the consultants for the Colaba-Seepz Metro-3 underground project. However, the study did not specify what type of personal data the respondents were willing or not willing to share.

Speaking about it an AECOM official said, "The survey question did not specify what kind of data. The survey was to gauge citizens' willingness to give city agencies access to personal data if deemed relevant for the improvement of infrastructure."

The study was conducted on more than 10,000 individuals from cities across the world including London, Riyadh, New York, and Hong Kong.

The study further reveals that 78 per cent preferred using one mobile app to stay updated about public transport, while 75 per cent was in favour of paying for water, power, public transportation via mobile app.

The study further states that 51 per cent of Mumbai's citizens feel the government usually make the right decisions when it comes to funding large infrastructure projects. 57 per cent agree that city officials were clear about submission procedures while requesting citizen feedback about public infrastructural issues.

Further, the study also conducted a survey of citizens who pay for public transportation or other utilities using a mobile app, contactless debit or credit card, and smart card for transport. In this context, 78 per cent uses contactless credit or debit card, 61 per cent uses mobile app for payment for transport while 49 per cent uses smart card for the same.
