Once, considered not trustworthy, the online lottery system of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) fetched the housing authority Rs 1 crore this year. The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) had borrowed the system from MHADA for Rs 1 crore to sell its properties. This, the authority said, has helped to strengthen their claim of transparency in the lottery system.

Speaking about it, Chief Executive Officer and Vice President of MHADA Milind Mhaiskar said that other housing authorities asking for its lottery system strengthens their claim of transparency in the system.

"In this year, we earned Rs 1 crore by giving our lottery system to others. We have also earned Rs 50 crore after we were made the planning authority for MHADA buildings. This is a new head in our income category," said a senior MHADA officer.

According to housing expert Dr Sanjay Chaturvedi, the system has undergone a lot of changes under which a lot of issues have been resolved. "With the increasing number of people applying and reapplying for the lottery shows that they have developed a trust for MHADA homes, the prices of which are attractive too," he added.

Expressing his trust on the lottery system, Kailash Rajwadkar, a media professional from Kalyan who had applied in the Mumbai board lottery held in December 2018 but did not win a house, said, "I think that the lottery system is transparent. I am waiting for MHADA to come out with more homes in the High Income Group segment so that I can apply again."

While he has trust in the system, he demands more clarity. "In the last lottery, three people from the same family won houses. I was under the belief that members of the same family cannot apply for homes in the same category or same area. Had I known that such a rule doesn't exist, I would have submitted multiple applications. The housing authority should clarify these small issues," he said.
