Finally, after a long wait, underworld don, Chhota Rajan, on Thursday was produced before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court through video conferencing (VC) in connection with his alleged role in the murder of scribe Jyotirmoy Dey. The court presided over by judge A Pansare informed the gangster and the investigating agency that it is going to frame charges against the accused on January 19.

Meanwhile, the accused has also sought time from the court to approach a lawyer who can represent him in the case, which the court has accepted.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the court that it has taken over the investigation in the case from the Crime Branch and it will conduct further investigations in the case.

The court, in last hearing, had issued a production warrant against the gangster and thus the jail authorities of Tihar Jail, had produced him via VC. The CBI, while explaining the reasons as to why he was not produced in person, claimed that there was a threat to the accused's life in Mumbai so he was being produced through VC.

The agency claimed that it was the gangster who had addressed a letter to the local court in Delhi about the life threat which he suspects in Mumbai.

When Rajan was produced before the court, the court explained him the proceedings which have taken place in the case till date and asked CBI to provide him with a copy of charge sheet, which would help the court to initiate with framing of charges on next date.

Eight of the 11 arrested accused, are languishing behind bars for the last four years. Scribe Jigna Vora and Paulson Johnson have been granted bail and one accused, Vinod Asrani, passed away mid-trial.
The court had framed charges against the 11 on June 8, which include being a part of the gang run by Rajan and hatching a conspiracy to kill Dey, who was shot dead in Powai on June 11, 2011.
