Using local services on the Central Railway won't be easy for citizens on Sunday as trains will stop running between Dadar and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus for nearly eight hours as part of a massive maintenance and upgrade exercise.

There will be no or curtailed services between the two busy stations during this time, said CR officials. "We will be launching the girders for foot overbridges at Parel and Currey Road," said Sunil Udasi, CR's chief public relations officer.

While no train will run on the Up fast line (towards CSMT) from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, the Down (towards Thane) fast and all slow lines will remain closed from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

The Up suburban services to CSMT will be terminated at Dadar and Kurla. The services terminating /originating at Dadar, Kurla and Thane will run as per CR's timetable. Services on Harbour and Trans Harbour line will run as per weekday working. Authorities have also cancelled 6 outbound trains.

The CR had come under severe criticism after 23 people were killed in a stampede at Elphinstone station on September 29, 2017, prompting the railways to go into overdrive to upgrade facilities and improve efficiency. Officials said it's not possible to complete certain work during night blocks.

To ease the pressure on CR commuters, city transport undertaking BEST has decided to run 16 extra buses between 8 am and 5 pm on Sunday. These buses will run from Wadala, Colaba and Backbay depots. Also, Route No. 1 will have five extra services – from Colaba bus station to Bandra Reclamation and Khodadad Circle.

Route No. 25 (limited) will have four extra services from Backbay depot to Rani Laxmibai Chowk. Route 63 will have three extra services from Wadala depot to Byculla station (west), Route 106 will have two extra services from Colaba bus station to Churchgate station (east), while Route 112 will have two additional services from Churchgate station (east) to Gateway of India.
