A high-level committee of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in Delhi has summoned municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta, the urban development department secretary and the environment secretary on Wednesday, in connection with the Deonar dumping ground fire. Additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee will accompany Mehta to present the civic administration's case.

Sources said union misnister for environment Prakash Javadekar had sent a two-member committee to take stock of the fire, and Mehta was called after that panel submitted its report.

Frequent fire eruption at Deonar dumping ground in the last two months has raised concern among residents about the poor air quality of the affected and neighbourhood areas. Pocket fires on the ground have made the fire-fighting job difficult, as there are no access roads to reach the pockets.

Javadekar had ordered an inquiry into the issue 10 days ago. A two-member team visited the Deonar dumping ground last Tuesday, the same day that member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya met CPCB members. The control board has called the civic chief to understand what the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was doing about the issue.

Discussing the issue of Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds, Somaiya said, "The pollution board was shocked that no scientific waste disposal system existed at Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds. I have demanded criminal action against defaulters."

Meanwhile, the municipal commissioner met Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar and sought a joint visit to the dumpyard. The top cop has promised to extend all help needed to protect the dumping ground.
