While you celebrate the festival of lights this year, make sure you are cautious because the Mumbai Police is going to keep a keen watch on violators. The Commissioner of Police (CP), Datta Padsalgikar on Thursday announced that bursting crackers beyond 10pm during Diwali will be regulated. However, on Laxmi Puja, observed on October 30 the deadline is exceeded till midnight.

Padsalgikar said, "The Mumbai Police will have a keen watch on it, and those bursting crackers beynd 10pm will be penalized. Not only crackers bursting beyond 10pm but loud crackers also will be regulated. Each police station has a decibel meter. If a complaint is made of noise pollution, strict actions will be taken." The standard decibel limit in residential areas during day time is 55 db while during night time, 55 db is the limit as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Mumbai is known to be the most noisiest city in the country according to the CPCB. "In the past couple of months, 172 cases have been registered for exceeding db limits," he added.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening, Chief Fire Officer, (CFO) P. Rahangdale had written a letter objecting a ban on Chinese lanterns also known as flying lanterns. CFO also revealed statistics of fire calls received during Diwali in the past three years.

Acccording to the data, between 2013 to 2015, 217 calls were received of which, 103 calls reported fire at residencies or colonies. In as many as 80 incidents (calls), fire took place in godowns and other parts of the city.

In retrospection to that, the Mumbai Police has also issued an order banning the lanterns as well. "Those using these lanterns will be booked under section 188 of Indian Penal Code. If such disobedience causes or tends to cause danger to human life, health or safety, the person can be imprisoned or fined of Rs. 200 or both," CP, Padsalgikar said.
