The Bombay high court was on Friday informed by the state government that it has installed CCTV cameras at the Matunga children's home to ensure safety of its inmates. The government added that it will install cameras in all children and foster care homes in the state.

A 17-year-old boy died at David Sassoon Children's Home in Matunga on May 28 after a brutal assault by other inmates. The court had then called for steps to be taken by the government to ensure such incidents don't occur again.

The court had also taken suo motu cognisance of the June 4 report of the principal magistrate, City Juvenile Justice Board, that juveniles at Matunga Home are ragged physically and mentally and also sexually abused. The report stated that drugs were easily available to the inmates and juveniles who had turned adults continued to be kept in remand homes.

A division bench of justice VM Kanade and justice BP Colabawala directed the government to provide security outside remand homes for better safety of inmates and to expeditiously implement the recommendations given by NGO Prayas in its report after visit to such homes.

Last year, the court had taken suo motu cognisance of the dilapidated condition of the Children's Observation Home at Dongri, Umerkhadi. It had then directed the government to shift the children from the building and asked the government to reconstruct the home at the earliest. Some 339 children, including 250 boys and 84 girls were directed to be shifted to alternative accommodation. The girls were shifted to nearby Asha Sadan while the boys were shifted to the Matunga home.

The bench, while adjourning the matter by one week, said: "You go and visit these children homes, you feel sad. We hope and trust that CCTVs and security outside these homes will be provided forthwith."
