The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) organised an Indo-US workshop at Sahyadri state guesthouse on May 18, in which the officers of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had a dialogue with Indian police and investigating agencies. Transnational crimes and terrorism issues were among the main subjects discussed.

Other agencies that participated in the two-day workshop included National Investigation Agency (NIA), Mumbai police and other state police departments.

A senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, who attended the workshop, said, "There were discussions on Letters Rogatory and Mutual Legal Assistant Treaty (MLAT) between India and the US. Such legal treaties are very important while seeking assistance during probe of transnational crimes and terrorism cases. We discussed the functioning of the investigating agencies of both countries. Problem and knowledge sharing was also a part of the workshop."

Superintendent of police and above-rank officers from other state police departments, including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, also attended the workshop. Mumbai crime branch had earlier sent an MLAT to the US during the 26/11 probe and had sought legal assistance from the US on sharing information about Pakistani terrorist David Coleman Headley and his associate Tahawwur Rana.

Similarly in January last year, that NIA, which was probing the activities of Areeb Majeed, an alleged recruit of the dreaded terror group IS, had approached a US company providing free call services with a request from an Indian court to "preserve data" related to the accused. "Such workshop are very necessary for officers, as whenever they get an important posting and handle important cases, knowledge imparted through such workshops will help them," said a police officer.
