Property Cell of city crime branch on Friday arrested a man, who had listed himself on a popular mobile phone directory service claiming to be into towing and garage services and dupe people.

According to the police, on the night of May 31, 2014, the complainant (in this case) was travelling in his car on Eastern Freeway towards CST when his vehicle dashed against a BEST bus. He immediately informed Sewree police about the incident. In the meantime, his friend called up 'Just Dial', a mobile directory service, and sought contact information on towing and garage services.

After some time, one Sameer called the victim's friend and said 'Just Dial' had called him up about their requirement. Sameer then towed the victim's car and brought it to Anthony Garage at Turner Road in Bandra.

The victim gave Sameer Rs 10,000 as service charge. On June 6, Sameer informed him that the total expenditure for the repair would be around Rs 30,000. On June 10, the victim gave Sameer Rs 20,000 near Regal Cinema.

Thereafter when the victim called Sameer to inquire about his car, Sameer didn't respond. When he visited the garage in Bandra, he didn't find his vehicle there either. "He then contacted Anthony and was shocked to learn that Sameer was a vehicle thief. He then lodged a complaint with Sewree police," said inspector Nandkumar Gopale.

Officers in Property Cell received information that Sameer stays in Jogeshwari, and he was picked up. He admitted to having duped the victim.

"Sameer also told us he was registered with 'Just Dial' under various names and companies such as Zuber Khan of Mama's Team garage, Wahid Khan of Auto Alliance and Auto Mama's garage. Last year he had duped someone and taken his Pajero. The Dharavi police have registered a case," said Gopale. Sameer has previously been arrested by Tilak Nagar police and Oshiwara police for similar offences. He has been handed over to Sewree police for further investigations.
