The Sahar police is probing a significant security lapse and a larger immigration racket following the arrest of a 34-year-old Gujarat-based woman on Friday who allegedly managed to fly to Canada on a bogus passport. The woman had successfully reached Canada in December 2016, where she was caught by immigration authorities after they realised her passport was fake, and was deported to India after three months of detention. The police suspect that the woman had received the passport from a gang involved in forging passports.

The accused has been identified as Bindumati Patel alias Mayuri Shah. Police said Patel had flown to Canada on a passport with the name Mayuri Shah. She had managed to pass the documents verification process from immigration in Mumbai, boarded the plane and had reached Canada. However, upon arrival, immigration authorities noted signs of suspicious behaviour. "The authorities questioned her. She broke down during the investigation and admitted to travelling on a bogus passport," said Baburao Mukhedkar, Senior Police Inspector of Sahar Police Station.
