Citing that construction work on two Metro projects and couple of flyovers connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is ongoing, the MMRDA has expressed inability to provide space to a cycle stand in BKC. This is after office-goers from BKC had written to the MMRDA. Earlier, MMRDA had denied saying plans are not yet fixed but now citing ongoing infrastructure work, it has denied alloting space for cycle stands.

Earlier in February 2018, the MMRDA had denied the same citing plans yet to be drafted but now it has cited construction work on several infrastructure projects in and around BKC as the reason for not being able to have cycle stand.

The demand was raised by couple of office goers at BKC who written to both Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and MMRDA for having cycle stand at Bandra station and BKC for daily office goers who can commute between the two destinations via cycle.

However, MMRDA in a reply dated July 26, 2018 said, "For several infrastructure projects in BKC traffic diversions for vehicles and pedestrian movement is going to be done, and hence it is not possible to allot space for cycle stand at this moment."

Construction work on two Metro projects namely Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 underground corridor and DN Nagar-BKC-Mandale Metro-2B elevated corridor is currently ongoing in BKC along with it construction work on flyover between BKC and Chunnabhatti followed by construction work on two flyovers to be commenced in couple of months.

Bharat Shah, who travels to BKC from Bandra station had demanded cycle stand said, "MMRDA had recently promoted the cycling culture but it is sad to know that they are only denying for alloting space for the same. Also, MMRDA had earlier given cycle tracks in BKC but no cycle stand. I think, planning agencies should plan for cycle stands rather than cycle tracks because finding parking for cycles is a task."

Shah added, "I don't think alloting space for cycle stand will take much of space. We can be alloted space in internal roads of BKC easily."

Meanwhile, a MMRDA official said, "We have not denied having or alloting space for cycle stand but we have denied doing the same currently when so many infrastructure project works is ongoing especially when we have requested offices in BKC to stagger work hours of all working in BKC to control vehicular traffic. But we can always have cycle stand at BKC in future once construction work is over."

NO CYCLE STAND

  • Daily 2 lakh people go BKC for work turning in around 20,000 vehicles daily.
  • Office goers had demanded having cycle stand at BKC and Bandra station for enviornment friendly commute.
  • Earlier in 2011, MMRDA had opened cycle track measuring around 13-km-long in BKC spending Rs 6 crore but that was removed later due to poor response.
