The Mumbai police are likely to provide security cover to the 20-year-old son of a Ghatkopar-based builder who was released by his kidnappers on Monday. He had been abducted a month ago. The victim is assisting the police by providing them with descriptions of the suspected kidnappers. The police have been tracking the suspects, but have been unable to trace them so far.

"Even though the youth has come home safely to his family, we are thinking about providing him with security cover, since the kidnappers have not yet been arrested," said a senior police officer.

The victim, a college student, went missing on March 12. A day later, his family received a call from men who identified themselves as his abductors. They demanded Rs2 crore by way of ransom. Following this call, the family informed the Tilak Nagar police about the incident.

The family had alleged that the local police had leaked the information about the kidnapping to the media, after which the probe was handed over to the crime branch.

The abductors would establish contact with the family using various phone numbers. The youth was reportedly taken to several places by them, including Nashik, Shahapur, Panvel and Matheran. Meanwhile, a month elapsed, and the police could not get any leads on the culprits.

"The family is believed to have made the payment of the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. The money was paid to the kidnappers on Sunday and the boy was released a day later in the Panvel area," said a crime branch officer, requesting anonymity.

The youth then contacted his family. After the police came to know of the youth's return, they called him for inquiries. "We are in the process of getting descriptions of the suspects from the victim. We are also probing whether anyone known to the family is involved or not," said the officer.
