With the failure of the University of Mumbai in implementing the on-screen system of evaluation, the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU) will organise a teacher-student demonstration at the University's Fort campus on Monday.

Hundreds of teachers are expected to join the protest against the total failure of the university in declaring results of all the exams due to the last minute implementation of on-screen evaluation under its current Vice Chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh. Teachers said that they are unnecessarily blamed for the delay, which as per them is a result of last minute implementation and technical glitches of the assessment system.

"Over the last few days, as the delay of results is hitting students at the university hard, officials have now resorted to blaming teachers for the delay. All the teachers across colleges and university departments are going to their evaluation centres regularly. However, it is due to the numerous glitches in the online system and delay in starting the process that a large number of teachers are able to correct very few papers" said Rohini Sivabalan, BUCTU President.

"The VC took a unilateral decision and did not consult any of the stakeholders of the university including teachers. Now teachers are being sent notices for no fault of theirs. The university should first improve its system before blaming teachers," said Sivabalan.

At the protest march, which is expected to begin at 3 pm on Monday, several students who are hit by the delay are set to join. As on date, over 10 lakh papers are yet to be evaluated as a result of which the University might not be able to stick to the July 31 deadline set by the Governor.
