After doing exceedingly well in the 2017 BMC elections, Rajeshree Shirwadkar of BJP, from ward 172 of Matunga area, has appealed to her supporters to donate notebooks rather than bringing flowers to congratulate her.

Shirwadkar who bagged 13,731 votes in the recent election, plans to collect at least the same number of notebooks till May this year. These books will be distributed among the needy children of various areas in the ward.

Speaking about the initiative, Rajeshree said, "I will have to throw away the flowers after a few days. Rather than collecting them, I have appealed to the citizens and well-wishers to bring notebooks which can be of help to students in need."

The initiative which began last week will be carried out till May end. "Once the academic year starts, we will distribute the notebooks. Within days we have received over 500 notebooks from residents staying in the nearby area," said Shirwadkar.

Nimesh Shah, who donated 108 notebooks, said, "It is nice to see that with the help of citizens staying in this area the elected corporator is doing social work for the ward. I am happy to donate these notebooks and will be spreading the word to nearby residents too."

While Shirwadkar has been doing social work by collaborating with residents in her ward for the last five years, the notebook donation drive was started only four years back.

"This year too, the notebook donation drive will be carried out but this time we have included citizens as well," added Rajeshree. Ajay Pandya, member of Sion Welfare Forum, said, "Citizens are donating according to their capabilities. It is good to see people coming forward to contribute for this cause."
