The Bombay high court on Monday directed the Mumbai University to consider the representation of engineering students, who want the university to hold their semester exams of fourth year, in the same academic year after they clear their ATKT (Allow to Keep Term) exams.

Why the deadline?
A division bench of Justices Anoop Mohta and AS Gadkari while hearing the petition directed the MU to consider the representation by October 21 as exams were nearing. The court observed that it was an issue related to students career and thus priority should be given.
Krutika Sakhare, a student, has moved the court against the MU, ordinance of 2013, which makes it mandatory for engineering students, to appear for their fourth year exams, as per the new syllabus.

What did the students want?
dna had reported earlier about the grievance raised by the students. They wanted the university to allow them to appear for their VII and VIII semester exams, in the same academic year of 2014-2015 after clearing ATKT, as it was allowed in the year 2009, by issuing a circular.

How many students would be effected?
If the university does not consider the representation then the decision would affect around 1,000 students in their academics and job placements. Advocate, Nitin Gangal, appearing for the 900 student said, "We have challenged the MU ordinance of 2013. That ordinance was passed in August 2013. As per that students who will clear their ATKT this year (2014-15), will have to appear next year for their fourth year exams. This will affect their academics and also placement."
