Bombay High Court chief justice retires

Addressing the media, Shah said, "I have served five years as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. As far as my experience goes, I feel the people here (in Mumbai) have a better sense of social and civic responsibility. I feel we should test the efficacy of any law from a common man's point of view. It should meet the expectations of the common man, and not the judges or lawyers."

Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit Shah retired on Tuesday after serving on the post for five years. From Wednesday onwards, Justice V K Tahilramani will be the acting Chief Justice.

Addressing the media, Shah said, "I have served five years as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. As far as my experience goes, I feel the people here (in Mumbai) have a better sense of social and civic responsibility. I feel we should test the efficacy of any law from a common man's point of view. It should meet the expectations of the common man, and not the judges or lawyers."

Born on September 9, 1953 in Gujarat, Shah assumed office of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on June 26, 2010. During his five-year tenure, he took suo moto cognizance of various social issues in Maharashtra, including poor condition of roads and shelter homes, the issue of providing education and other facilities to students with learning disabilities and so on.

Officials said they received several calls and letters of gratitude from the citizens last year when Shah ordered the railways to increase the height of platforms on suburban railway lines so as to prevent fatal mishaps. Similarly, his decision to put a cap on the height of buildings in the heritage area of Marine Drive was welcomed by several activists, heritage conversationalists and locals.

Shah started his practice in the Gujarat High Court in 1976 and was promoted as judge there in September 1995. He was promoted as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on December 24, 2009 following which he assumed the office of Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. He was being considered for the post of Chairman of the Law Commission of India in Delhi but he decided to stay in Mumbai.
