MUMBAI: The centralised examination for the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) is a zero-stress examination. With approximately 8,000 students vying for more than 11,000 seats at the Mumbai University, theoretically, a student scoring a zero would also gain entry into the course.

This also indicates that something has gone wrong with the course that the university had started with much fanfare in 1999.

Apart from a handful of colleges, many are finding it difficult to fill up the seats. “Several colleges offering the course have mushroomed in the city. Many colleges want to start the course because it is self-financed and generates revenue, but are stingy when it comes to providing the requisite facilities,” said the principal of a college in north Mumbai.

“This course requires the faculty to be dynamic, creative and imaginative,” said Indu Shahani, principal, HR College of Commerce in Churchgate — one of the few colleges that has received good response for the course.

But BMS is not enough to secure a job, said a student. “The course content is good. But one has to do an MBA to break into the managerial cadre. A BMS won’t suffice,” said Ashish Kakwani, who completed his BMS degree from Mithibai College.

Also, the student community is divided over doing a BMS or a BCom degree. “If I have to do an MBA even after BMS, I would rather go for BCom as it is cheaper (than BMS),” said Anjali Pendharkar who has just taken her HSC examination.

The BMS course normally costs Rs10,000 a year. To fill up vacancies, the university allows colleges to hold their own entrance tests apart from the centralised one it conducts. “This dilutes the brand value of the course,” said a college teacher.
