The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to buy an iris machine to register the attendance of its employees who have poor or no finger prints making it difficult for them to register their attendance through the biometric machine introduced by the civic body about two months ago.
DNA had reported on December 13 about a class four employee of B ward who did not receive her salary as she could not mark her attendance in the biometric machine.
According to an official from the general administration of BMC, the decision to buy the iris machine was taken after a section of employees complained about not being to mark their attendance in the biometric machine. "The exact number of machines that the BMC requires will be decided by the human resources department," said the official.
Hansa Jadhav from the BMC's B ward did not receive her salary for the month of November as her fingerprints were of poor quality and could not register in the biometric machine. The BMC made biometric attendance compulsory for all employees and even declared a cut in salary for those who failed to do so.
In December, the BMC decided to cut the salary of around 3,800 employees for not marking their attendance in the biometric systems. "I used to get my salary by the first week of every month. But till December 20, I did not receive my salary for November," said Jadhav. Later officials from the B ward took up the matter with senior officials of the administrative and human resource departments of the BMC. "There are a total of 140 employees in the BMC who have this problem with their finger prints and could not mark their attendance in the biometric machine. So, the iris machine will help them," said the official.
