Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received nod to set-up its own disaster response force on the lines of country's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The team will be set up with a initial strength of 200 security personnel which will get training by NDRF team under Indian Army's supervision.

The BMC will become the first civic body in the country to have own its own disaster response force on the line of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Civic chief paved way for setting-up City Disaster Response Force (CDRF) on Tuesday. The civic body had started planning to set up its own disaster response force after building collapsed in Bhiwandi near Mumbai last year. The civic body is expecting that CDRF team, after training, will be available for service during monsoon.

According to official, the force will be able to rescue people during disasters like earthquake, flood and building collapse in the city. They will also be capable of giving first aid to injured during accident.

In the last one year, around 200 personnel were recruited in the civic security department and they will be given training on the lines of central government's NDRF team. “During training, they will be trained to handle various type of disasters like chemical, flooding, building collapse among others,” said the official.

The CDRF will be provided with latest equipment which will help them to rescue people during disaster. Some of the equipment are victim locater, portable breathing machine, airlifting bag, life detector machine, diving kit among others. In addition, all 200 CDRF personnel will get latest reflector jacket for increased visibility.

According to civic officials, at present, the city already has 3 teams of 45 NDRF officials in Andheri and it has to cater to the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region and thus the need for a city-based team has been felt.
