After no private players showed an interest in operating the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) introductory cycle track which was inaugurated in December 2017, the civic body is planning to run the track, which runs from Marine Drive to Worli sea link, itself. Ward A of BMC has already made a proposal which will be presented before the civic chief.

Private players backed out from operating the cycle track as they did not find it commercially viable. The traffic department did not allow putting advertisements along the route. The private operator was given a three-month contract to run the cycle track which ended in March. Thereafter, the civic body did find any new private player to run it.

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of A ward, confirmed that the BMC is now planning to run the track all by itself. "A new proposal has been prepared to run the cycle track which will be put before the civic chief for permission," said Dighavkar.

The track was started on December 3, 2017 with much fanfare and the initiative was welcomed by residents. The inauguration function of the cycle track was attended by BMC chief Ajoy Mehta and Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar. Even cycle enthusiasts thronged the track in the first week itself. However, it was shut owing to various reasons including the traffic department's concern over lack of manpower and traffic issues.

The BMC had created a dedicated lane for the cycle track. The lane was demarcated with a painting. The cycle track is in three parts starting from NCPA to Wilson College, then from Wilson College to Haji Ali and Haji Ali till the start of the Worli Sea Link. The cycle route consisted NCPA, Marine Drive, Babulnath, Pedder Road, Annie Besant Road and Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg up to the Sea Link.
