BMC set to upgrade cemeteries, 15 to be made pollution-free

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to upgrade cemeteries across the city. Not only will electric furnace be set up at traditional cemeteries, efforts to make the process pollution-free is also on the cards.

The civic body plans to make around 15 cemeteries across the city pollution free. "We have plans to make all Hindu crematorium grounds pollution free," said a senior civic official.

There are total of 176 cemeteries in the city, of which 47 are owned by the BMC, while the remaining are private. Of the 47 cemeteries, 32 Hindu crematoriums, 6 are for Muslims, two for Christians, and seven are composite.

Of the 129 private cemeteries, 34 Hindu creamtoriums, 47 Muslims cemetries, 41 Christian, seven for Buddhists, Armenians, Parsis, and Jews.

As per the plan, this financial year, the civic body will convert 13 electric chullahs to PNG-based furnace. Of the 15 conventional cemeteries, 11 will be converted into electric furnace ones. Another 15 will be made pollution-free.

During the 2017-18 Budget session, the civic body had proposed to convert six electric furnace into PNG ones in the first phase. These cemeteries are located at Daulat Nagar in Borivali, Dahanukarwadi in Kandivli, Charai in Chembur, Shivaji park in Dadar, and Chandanwadi in Marine Lines.

A senior civic official said all cemetries will be converted and upgraded during this fiscal. "Work in most of the cemeteries have been initiated," added the official.
