For the past two years, a plot measuring 1,700 sq metre in the prime Mumbai Central area was lying undeveloped. In fact, it was an eyesore for the locals, since it was filled with muck and haphazardly-grown shrubs. However, now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken heed of their complaints and decided to develop it into a traffic island garden, which can be accessed by residents, civic officials informed.
According to local residents, development of the plot was stalled for the past two years. Civic sources attributed the delay to an ongoing work that was being carried out by the storm water drain.
A week ago, the garden department of the civic body started cleaning the plot and are in the process of planting shrubs for its beautification. "We will be constructing pathways and an open gym which can be used by locals. We couldn't start the work earlier because of an ongoing civic work in that area," said Vijay Hire, BMC's garden superintendent.
Another official from the civic body said that like some of the traffic island gardens, this one would be kept fencing-free, so that residents can easily access it.
Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas informed that the BMC was planning to develop the garden for a while now. "Work on the garden should be completed in the next couple of weeks," he said.
Residents of the area welcomed the move. Rajiv More, a resident staying nearby said he is happy that BMC has finally taken up the work. "Such a plot lying unused in the prime Mumbai Central area is a waste. Moreover, it had also turned out to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. We are happy that it is now being developed into a garden. It's a huge thing to have some green patch near your home in this city," he said.
