Over a fortnight after a high-ranking babu in Mumbai tweeted what she later said was a sarcastic acknowledgment of "Godse for 30.01.1948" in the backdrop of a spate of anti-Gandhi messages, the state government transferred Nidhi Choudhari to put paid to the controversy.

The 2012-batch IAS officer, said sources in the state's general administration department, will now serve as deputy secretary in the water supply and sanitation department — a comedown for somebody who held charge as deputy municipal commissioner (special) in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The state has also issued her a show-cause notice asking her for an explanation.

On May 17, Choudhari had tweeted about the "exceptional celebration" of Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. "High time, we remove his face from our currency, his statues from across the world, rename institutions/ roads named after him! That would be real tribute from all of us! ThankU #Godse for 30.01.1948," the tweet went.

Her remark, she pointed out later, was ironical and reflected her "anguish against the vilification of Gandhiji" by BJP MP Pragya Thakur's remark during her poll campaign that Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a "patriot".

"If only they had followed my timeline since 2011 they would've understood that I would NEVER even dream of insulting Gandhiji," Choudhari clarified on Twitter after deleting the controversial tweet "because some people misunderstood it".

But that did not change anything for those seeking to punish her for her "derogatory" comment. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and state Congress president Ashok Chavan called for action against her and NCP's Jitendra Avhad sought her suspension.

Talking to DNA earlier, Choudhari questioned why a controversy had not erupted right after the post was made but more than half a month later, in a "sudden and abrupt" manner, when it became easy to misread it.
