Blame shift in Bay of Bengal trough for that nip in the air

Some days ago the weather bureau predicted warmer weather. But if you are wondering why it isn’t really warm early in the morning or late in the evening, this is being attributed to the movement of pressure troughs in the Bay of Bengal.

“The minimum temperatures have remained between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius over the past few days as the troughs in the Bay of Bengal, which were expected to move westward have drifted south into south-western areas like Lakshadweep,” said Ajay Kumar, director of the India Meteorological Department in Mumbai. “As they did not bring moisture, the minimum temperatures have not risen. There is reason to believe that they will stay that way for the next five days.”

A trough is a convergence zone between the wind patterns of the southern and northern hemispheres. Typically, it is a low pressure area with shorter limits, unlike other elongated low pressure areas, Kumar explained.

A week ago, Mumbai recorded 14.6 degrees Celsius, the second lowest minimum temperature for November in the city. But the minimum temperature has moved up since then to about 18 degrees.

The weather office was expecting the minimum temperature to be at about 21 degrees Celsius. But the change in the movement of the troughs inside the Bay of Bengal has changed that.

“The minimum temperature is likely to be at 18-20 degrees Celsius for the next five days since the influence of the troughs is not being felt in Maharashtra,” Kumar said.

Sunday’s temperature recordings confirm this expectation. While the minimum and maximum temperatures at Santa Cruz was 18.2 degrees Celsius and 33.2 degress Celsius respectively, the temperatures at Colaba were 22.2 degrees Celsius and 31.8 Celsius.

The corresponding figures on Saturday were 16.8 and 33.5 degrees at Santa Cruz and 21.6 and 32.5 degrees at Colaba.
