Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said that his government will announce the biggest ever loan waiver package for small and marginal farmers in the state. It will also develop an Information-technology-based platform to identify genuine needy farmers for the loan waiver. He had earlier said that the loan waiver will be announced by October 31, 2017.

Replying to media queries along with Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu, Fadnavis said he has detailed information as to how only politically motivated people are behind violent incidents and incidents of destroying farmers' goods.

He pointed out that of the 307 market committees 300 were functional on Monday. He also added that of the seven market committees, four were closed due to their weekly off while three were shut due to the strike. Fadnavis said that a few market committees received 100 per cent farm produce.

Chief Minister said that there were incidents of stone pelting, destruction and setting ablaze farm produce or vehicles. He made it clear that he has detailed information that all these incidents were by political leaders and activists and it has nothing to do with genuine farmers.

He stated that FIRs have been filed against miscreants and going by identities of these miscreants he still stands by his allegations that political parties are trying to cash on the farmers' strike.

Refusing to reveal as to how much will be the burden on state treasury due to the proposed loan waiver, Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that there are 1.37 crore registered farmers of which 1.07 crore are small farmers with below 5 acres of landholding. He added that 67 lakh farmers have landholding of less than 2.5 acres and a plan will be chalked out for the needy farmers.
