A Bhayandar resident was fleeced of Rs 8.5 lakh by a quartet pretending to be from a non-profit organisation. The accused told the victim that they wanted to exchange smaller denomination notes with bigger ones and offered him a 10 per cent commission for the deal.
On March 10, Akash Doshi, 32 a resident of Motinagar, Bhayandar, West got a call from one Rajiv Sahani, 45 asking him about exchanging currencies. “Sahani was known to Doshi and told the latter that he runs an NGO which receives lots of donation,” said senior police inspector DS Dhole, Kasarvadavli police station. “He told Doshi that they receive lots of small denomination notes which makes it difficult to handle them,” he says.
Sahani said that if Doshi would exchange those notes for bigger currency, he would give him a 10 per cent commission on the deal. He also made Doshi talk to his friends some associates, known to the victim as -- Mukeshi, Aman and Manoj.
On March 21, the quartet called him to a hotel near Ghodbunder road with the cash. At around 2 pm, when Doshi reached the decided location with Rs 8.5 lakh in Rs 2000 currency notes in his car, the quartet asked him to come to Vijay Garden society nearby. At around 2:30 pm, Doshi reached the spot and the accused showed him a bag full of Rs 100 notes which totalled to Rs 8.5 lakh.
