In order to resolve the indefinite strike called by BEST unions from October 21, top officials from the BEST Committee will soon meet Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar and will also initiate a dialogue with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

"We will be meeting the Mayor and then also seek an appointment with Uddhav ji in this matter," said Anil Kokil, Chairman, BEST Committee who represents Shiv Sena. The BEST has been trying to get an appointment from the Mayor since BEST Workers Union, headed by Shashank Rao, threatened to go on an indefinite strike from October 21. However, the committee has not managed to get one. Now, they will meet the mayor on October 16 and plan to work out a strategy to address the issue.

The unions have been stating that the BEST administration has refused to give Diwali bonus to their 44,000 employees this year due to financial crunch. However, its parent organisation, BMC, has distributed Diwali bonus among their employees to the tune of Rs 1,400 crore.

"When the BMC can give a bonus to their employees, then why not to their sister concern. Our decision to go on protest from October 21 remains until the BEST staff get their Diwali bonus," said Shashank Rao, president, BEST Workers Union. This will be an indefinite agitation and workers will not report to work voluntarily from October 21. Last time, the BEST workers had gone on strike was during Raksha Bandhan this year to demand timely payment of salaries.
