Commissioner of Police, Dean of J.J. Group of Hospitals, Director of Archives, Registrar of the City Civil Court, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Mumbai Collectorate, Dean of KEM Hospital, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and MMRDA, are some of the several agencies that have outstanding power bills with the loss-making Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST).

Various government, private agencies and individuals owe Rs53.58 crore to BEST by way of power bills. These arrears are as on April 16 this year.

Just from government agencies, the dues amount to Rs28.12 crore; Mumbai police department itself owes Rs6.19 crore. The others in the list of defaulters include MLA's Hostel in south Mumbai.

Among the private companies, the defaulters are Maker Tower, Royal Western India Turf Club, Bharati Cellular, Hindustan Thompson Association, and Hutchinson Essar.

Royal Western India Turf Club had dues worth Rs67.69 lakh, and Bharati Cellular owes Rs20.28 lakh.

This list was produced during the BEST's standing committee meeting on Wednesday by committee member Ravi Raja.

Raja questioned why the administration was showing leniency towards the defaulters despite some of them not having paid up for years now. In some instances, the dues are pending since the year 2009, but the electricity connections have not been disconnected yet.

It was also discussed to start disconnecting power connections of such defaulters, so that the defaulters are treated at par with ordinary customers, with whom the BEST is far from lenient.
