A day after general body of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) cleared proposal for garbage collection and transportation, the standing committee on Thursday immediately cleared the same proposal.
Clearance of the proposal brings relief to residents from heaps of garbage harming them as a new contractor will take up the work of garbage clearance immediately.

The general body cleared the proposal for collection and transportation of garbage at Rs1,700 per metric tonne. Navi Mumbaikars have been grappling with the issue in various nodes ever since the contract of M/S Antony Waste Handling was terminated in August 2012 for inept services.

The new proposal gives a 10% hike to the contractor every year during the seven-year period for which the contract has been awarded. The rate decided per metric tonne has been arrived at on the recommendation by All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), to whom the proposal was referred to. It had opined that the maximum and minimum rate range should be in the band of Rs2,400 to Rs1,700 per metric tonne.

The corporation has already floated the tenders and the contractor has agreed to carry out the collection and transportation of garbage at the mentioned rate. A civic official said, "The work is expected to begin soon and it means relief to the citizens of Navi Mumbai. Also, we will be able to transport garbage as per the standards laid down by the court."
