They will be getting bigger 500 square feet homes along with attached bathrooms.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has undertaken the redevelopment of BDD chawls. The survey was taken up in the last week and 14 chawls were shortlisted. The people concerned were intimated in advance and were asked to keep their documents ready. During the survey, the authority found some of the houses to be locked.

According to the MHADA officials, some residents didn't cooperate with the authorities and the number of such houses stands at 25. The chawls that were surveyed includes chawl numbers 31, 32, 57, 58, 59, 69, 61, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 100, and 101. The tenants who did not cooperate will be met and made to understand the need for redevelopment.

However, many of the tenants, who had locks on their doors approached the authorities later and took part in the survey. A senior official from the MHADA associated with the redevelopment of BDD said, "The survey went smooth, we finished the survey of 14 chawls in the first phase.

"The contract for this redevelopment project has been awarded to Tata Capacite. These chawls house as many as 9,689 tenants and the expected cost of the project is Rs 10,700 crore. Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon, a small portion of the concrete railing of building number 76 came crashing down. None got injured. Most of the buildings here were constructed almost a century ago. The buildings are old and dilapidated and need urgent redevelopment.
