Tata Power has issued a fresh statement saying power will be fully restored by late night on Tuesday.

The company stated in the press release that the restoration work of unit 5 that tripped at around 9.45 am, is (still) under progress. “Partial load has been restored through the hydro stations and the company has activated the initialisation activities of its cold standby Unit #6 which runs on oil and was kept on cold with the consent of the procurers,” the statement read.

The company further said that while power was available in the neighbouring areas of Maharashtra, it was not possible to import for Mumbai as the transmission network was overloaded. “The distribution companies are now doing a rotational load shedding in their respective areas,” the statement further read

Parts of Mumbai suffered power cuts since morning after a Tata Power 500 Mw power generation unit tripped, on Tuesday. The tripping crippled power supply in Mumbai as the licensee’s two other units generating 750 Mw were not functioning following scheduled shutdown.

Sources told dna the situation would take hours before the normalcy was restored. “Overall, there is a gap of 1250 Mw in the assured supply to city and suburbs that consume roughly 3200 Mw.

Thus, the island city that is mainly catered by Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport undertaking, is reeling under power cuts,” sources told dna. BEST procurs its power from Tata Power as it doesn’t have its own generation units. While liance Tata Power’s installed capacity is 1877 Mw, BEST requires about 1000 Mw to supply its own consumers. Suburbs, too, suffered as Reliance Energy was forced to shut down its feeders.

“The incident has triggered in rotational power cuts by Tata Power in areas such as Chembur, lSantacruz East, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Kurla, Tilaknagar, Vikhroli, Sakinaka and Juhu,” a Reliance Energy spokesperson said. Reliance Energy has its own 500 Mw generation unit while they also have power purchase agreements with Tata Power and other producers.

Tata Power confirmed this in a statement, saying, “Tata Power would like to inform that today, on September 2nd at 09:45 hours, the power supply was affected due to tripping of Unit #5 of Trombay Power Station. This tripping has resulted in load reduction of Parel, Mahalaxmi, Dharavi, Chembur and Gr Road area of Mumbai to control loading on 220Kv Khargar - Nerul – Sonkar - Trombay tie line. We are working towards an early resolution and will ensure power supply to these areas at the earliest. We would like to reiterate Tata Power’s commitment to providing reliable and 24X7 quality power to the city of Mumbai.”

The situation is expected to improve by 4 pm, sources told dna.
