Even though Diwali was quieter this year, there was no respite for animals. A baby cobra and a kite were among many animals injured due to bursting of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations.
“We have rescued a kite and a baby cobra on Monday. The kite is being treated and its condition is stable. The baby cobra was injured after some children kept a firecracker on its hole. We will release the snake in the wild in a day or two,” said Sunish Subramaniam of the Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
Apart from these, some stray dogs were also injured during Diwali.
“There has been a fewer incidents this year as people have become aware. We have two cases of stray dogs on whom children had thrown crackers. The injuries were superficial,” says Shakuntala Majumdar, a member of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Thane.
