A 25-year-old autorickshaw driver was killed after a speeding taxi knocked him down at Goregaon (East) in the wee hours of Monday. The Vanrai police have launched a manhunt for the unidentified taxi driver.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Vinod Gupta, a resident of Ghas Bazaar. The incident took place at around 3am on a secluded road near a railway yard in Ghas Bazaar area when Gupta was returning home.

After completing his day's work, Gupta had gone to have drinks with his friends. As he was returning home in an inebriated state, a speeding taxi knocked him over and fled from the spot. The Vanrai police claimed that they have got an eyewitness who reportedly saw a black and yellow taxi (An Eco) knocking Gupta and escaping from the spot without helping him. The eyewitness informed the police control and with the help of passersby Gupta was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was declared dead after admission.

"We have registered a case of hit-and-run and are looking for the accused taxi driver. The place of the incident is secluded and does not have lights, but at some distance there is a camera. So, we are hoping that we would get details of the taxi from it," said senior police inspector Ramdas Chowdhari of Vanrai police station. He added: "We have registered a case under section 304 A (causing death due to negligence) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the taxi driver."
