Aurangabad cancer hospital to get institute status

In the month of July, this hospital was chosen under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke (NPCDCS) to elevate it as a State Cancer Institute but after a follow upgratnts have still not been given.

Soon, the state run cancer hospital at Aurangabad will get the status of State Cancer Institute (SCI) for which it will get Rs 120crore from the central government to strengthen its facility.

Four years ago, the state medical education department had started a dedicated 100-bed cancer hospital at Aurangabad. This is the first and only hospital in the state which provides free cancer treatment to poor patients under the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Yojana, a government scheme where those who have a yellow ration card can avail health facilities for free.

In the month of July, this hospital was chosen under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke (NPCDCS) to elevate it as a State Cancer Institute but after a follow upgratnts have still not been given.

While talking to DNA, Girish Mahajan, minister of medical education said, “To get funds for this hospital, I will personally meeting union health minister JP Nadda, and soon we will strengthen this hospital facility. Most of the Marathwada region people come to this hospital for treatment. Several cancer patients have not able to visit Tata hospital for the treatment. We are very serious to start such institute in different part of the state. The Tata hospital already had major burden across the country because patient come from different state to secure the treatment.”

Currently the hospital has 10 ICU units, four wards with 25 beds each and eight operation theaters. In the last four years, more than 1 lakh patients avail benefits of this facility and a total of 30,000 chemotherapy cycles are offered to the patients. They have also conducted more than 5000 minor and major surgeries.

A senior doctor said, “In the past few months, all our senior doctors have been trying to get institute status for the hospital but to no avail. The move by the medical education minister who has shown keen interest will definitely help the poor patients.”
