Mumbaikars, time to get your raincoats and umbrellas ready as rains is going to make a comeback to the Maximum City after a long, dry and humid patch.

Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the city is likely to begin witnessing rains from Thursday night. “Rain activity is likely to continue for the next four to five days due to an off shore trough that has become active. However there is no warning issued for heavy rains,” an official said.

Akshay Deoras, an independent meteorologist explained that till Thursday the offshore trough was extending from Konkan coast to Kerala and by Friday it is likely to move northwards to Maharashtra coast. “This offshore trough has become active and it will result in regular rains for Mumbai. Mumbai is likely to witness good rains for the next 10 days and it could be even in a range of around 30mm daily,” he said adding that since there is absence of any other system other parts of Maharashtra state are not likely to receive rains.

“Rainfall intensity is expected to witness an increase from tomorrow and is likely to continue for the next four to five days. A few moderate spells with one or two heavy spells of rainfall are likely during this period. However, rain will not be a continuous affair and the intensity of rainfall will vary from place to place,” stated Skymet a private weather forecasting agency adding that the weather will not become dry over Mumbai for at least one week and temperatures are expected to drop to quite an extent and the day is expected to become comfortable.

This year, the southwest monsoon reached Mumbai on June 9, a day earlier than normal and since June 1 the Santacruz observatory has recorded 406.9 mm of rain while Colaba observatory has recorded 432.3mm of rains till date.
