An assistant police inspector (API) attached with Thane Rural police has been suspended by the superintendent of police (SP) after a video clip of him shaking a leg a dance bar went viral. In it, the cop was also seen showering cash on the podium at a dance bar in Thane. The inspector is said to have been close to late RR Patil when he was the home minister of the state.

API Umesh Patil attached with Kashimira police was videotaped by an unidentified person, apparently in a drunken state, at Sea Hawk ladies dance bar. The incident was reported to SP Rajesh Pradhan, and a primary enquiry was launched into the matter.

The probe found him to be on the 'wrong side of the law' because he is clearly seen showering the dancer with cash, and dancing along. The Thane Rural police have cracked down on several bars for alleged prostitution rackets.

A senior officer on condition of anonymity said: "Now, a top level probe will be launched, and the video will be furnished during the hearing. Such incidents will not be tolerated in the police department." The officer added: "The inspector was at fault as several complaints were reported to senior officers; since he was close to (the then) home minister RR Patil, action was taken only after the clip went viral."

Rajesh Pradhan, Thane Rural police SP, confirmed the incident saying: "Prima facie, it shows that the officer in question is an inspector at our department. The conduct displayed is unbecoming for a police officer; he has thus been suspended and enquiry has been set up," said Pradhan.
