It is the end of a long wait for Arif Majeed's family.

The Kalyan-based family, which was sunken in gloom because of the news of his death, is relieved to know that he is alive and is back in Mumbai. His mother Razia said, “We are very happy to know that my son is safe and sound.”

Friday began on a dramatic note for Arif's parents. Razia added, “On Friday morning, Arif's father got a call from the National Investigation Agency, saying that my son is in India, and asked him to meet them at 4.30pm at their Pedder Road office.”

Arif's agitated father planned to offer prayers before going to meet the NIA officers.

News of Arif's return set off eager gossip among his neighbours at Kalyan's Sarvodaya Park. One neighbour, on condition of anonymity said, “We are happy to know that he is back and he is safe. It came as a shock to us-- the news about his death. We are very relieved to know he is alive. His sister, who got married recently, is also very happy. She has come home to meet her brother. We want to know what motivated him to go to Iraq.”

Like a ripple in water, the news spread to the families of the three other youth who went to Iraq with Arif. These excited families, too, developed fresh hopes that the other three youths will return. “When we learnt about Arif's arrival, we offered prayers today. We hope that like him, even Shaheen and the other two boys will return home,” says a cousin of one of the youth named Shaheen Tanki. “We hope that like Arif, they also contact the Indian Embassy and get help to reach home,” the cousin said.

Iftikhar Khan, an uncle of one of the other three boys (Fahad), said, “We have not received any call about the other three boys and are worried for them. We are hoping that like Arif, even they would miraculously come back home.”

Khan said he hoped that Arif himself had news of their whereabouts. “We are happy to know that Arif will come home after the inquiry with the officers in Mumbai is over. Then we will also ask him about our boys,” Khan said.
