Stakeholders in the Kalbadevi area said that they welcomed the plan of the government of easing traffic issues but said that government’s approach needs to be more “holistic” and “honest” in implementation.

“These are very good and excellent plans. But this area is one of the biggest market areas in Asia. It cannot just shift. The government has to provide a lot of facilities. They need to have something like a Gold Souk so that the same area gets converted. Gold Souks have been made where entire markets have shifted. They should think of making a 50-storey building where everyone can be squeezed in. There will be parking. I am in favour of a cluster redevelopment and shifting the manufacturing facility,” said Surendra Mehta, national secretary of India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJM), which has its offices in Zaveri Bazaar.

DNA in its November 26, 2007 issue had for the first time reported about plans of Mumbai’s first pedestrian plaza coming up at Zaveri Bazaar. The BMC along with 20 associations had planned it. However, that did not move ahead mainly due to parking problem. Among the measures is a parking plaza but people are not convinced yet.

“They have said that they are doing it but one has to look how honestly it will be done. There is the hawker problem which is one of the biggest menaces. There are supposed to be only 92 hawkers but there are far more than that number. They are allotting new hawking pitches which is a very bad move.

Parking charges to discourage vehicles coming into the area is good. The alternative of mini buses was tried by people here, but taxi unions did not allow that to work smoothly,” said Shiv Kanodia, member of the Bhuleshwar Residents’ Association (TBRA) who also has a textile shop in the area.
