The police probe has revealed that the gang that was instrumental in leaking answer sheets out of Mumbai University (MU) has been operational since 2011. The police also suspect that the accused persons must have leaked several answer sheets in the past.

Bhandup police on Friday had arrested MU employees Mithun More (28), Chiman Solanki (41), Sanjay Kumbhar (24), Sandip Jadhav (28), Rohan More (28), Dinakar Mhatre (34), Siddhesh Jadhav (26) and Prabhakar Vaze (50) for their alleged involvement in the racket.

Explaining about the functioning of the racket, an officer, on condition of anonymity said: "Answer sheets comes to university through dispatch and then are being handled by clerks and custodians. The next procedure is scanning of these papers which takes place in a day or two once the paper reaches the university. Our probe revealed that students involved in this malpractice used to contact clerks before the examination and tell them that they will not write certain answers and that they would require the answer sheets so that the answers can be written on the sheets later. The clerks would then siphon off the sheets from university and give it to students concerned. The students would then comfortably go home, write answers on those sheets and return them to the clerks."

He added, students are also accused in the case, but they are not likely to be arrested. "We would chargesheet the students involved in the case and submit our report to the university. Our probe has revealed that the racket was thriving since 2011 and we suspect that they must have leaked many answer sheets in the past," the officer said.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh on Saturday constituted a fact finding committee under the chairmanship of Dr Siddeshwar Gadade, to investigate the fact about engineering answer sheet scam.
