As the Mumbai crime branch sleuths grill alleged Chhota Shakeel's sharpshooter Sayyed Abbas Tublani, more details about the overseas operations of Dawood Ibrahim gang and the gang-rivalry are tumbling out. Tublani was arrested on January 1, by the police for allegedly planning to eliminate former journalist S Balakrishnan at Shakeel's behest.

Tublani (47), had told the police during interrogation that in year 2000-01, Abu Salem, a former associate of Dawood Ibrahim gang, had usurped the gang's money after which Dawood's brother Anees got furious and had ordered Tublani to track him in Dubai. Salem, however, had got off the radar, police sources said.

"Tublani had committed at least three firings in 1996 and after coming out on bail, he had fled to Dubai where he worked as a driver of Anees Ibrahim. During his interrogation Tublani told the police that while in Dubai in 2000-01, Salem had misappropriated D-company's money and Anees was very furious about it. Anees then ordered Tublani to track Salem in Dubai and produce him before Anees. Salem had however, left Dubai by then," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

He added, Tublani had a good network of informants in Mumbai, which he used for passing information to Anees. At the instance of Shakeel, Tublani had stabbed one Manish Ajmeri, a matka king in Dubai. He was arrested for the crime in Dubai and was later released on bail.

According to the police, Shakeel had sent address of Balakrishnan's Goregaon based NGO office to Tublani via text message. "Tublani used to delete messages of his conversation with Shakeel immediately and hence we could not find any messages of Shakeel on his phone. We had recovered two mobile phones and Sim cards from Tublani and have sent them to forensic department to retrieve information," said the officer.
